Arsenal have confirmed that Jonas Eidevall has resigned and left his position with immediate effect. Assistant coach Renée Slegers will take over on an interim basis.

Eidevall joined Arsenal in 2021 from Swedish club Rosengård. During his tenure, he secured two Women's League Cup titles across three full seasons. He also guided the North London side to the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League.

Pressure had been building after a string of poor results at the start of the season. Last Wednesday, Arsenal suffered a heavy defeat to Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League, followed by a home loss to rivals Chelsea in the Women's Super League (WSL).

The team were booed off the pitch after conceding two early goals against their London rivals, who have continued to dominate the capital's football scene. After four games this season, the Gunners have won just once, leaving them five points off the top at this early stage.

Arsenal finished third in the WSL in the past two seasons, after coming second in Eidevall's first season in charge. Their first match of this new era will be a short trip to face West Ham on Sunday.

Director of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley, said: “We would like to extend a huge thank you to Jonas for his hard work and dedication to Arsenal Football Club over the past three years. Jonas has delivered back-to-back trophies in the last two seasons, along with many memorable moments on the pitch.

“We wish Jonas and his family good health, happiness, and success in the future. We have full confidence in Renée to lead the team during this interim period.”

Sporting Director Edu Gaspar added: “We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and his achievements since joining in 2021. We hold great respect for the dedication and passion he showed towards our women’s first team and acknowledge the important role he played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women. We wish him all the very best for the future.

“Our focus now shifts to the process of appointing a new head coach, while supporting Renée as she takes interim charge, starting with two important fixtures this week.”
