George Baldock Dies Aged 31 as Former Club Sheffield United Express 'Shock'
Baldock, who represented Greece internationally, signed for Panathinaikos FC this summer after spending seven years at Bramall Lane. He made his debut for the Greek club in August.
The full-back, who was not included in the Greece squad for Thursday’s match against England due to injury, played in Sunday’s goalless draw with Olympiacos. He earned 12 senior caps for Greece, having qualified through his grandparent.
A statement from Super League Greece read: “The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow at the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
His former Premier League club, Sheffield United, released a statement expressing their sadness:
“Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender departed the club this summer after seven years at Bramall Lane. He was highly regarded by supporters, staff, and team-mates who shared the pitch with him in the red and white shirt.
“The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”
England international and former Sheffield United player, Harry Maguire, posted “RIP” with a heartbreak emoji on Instagram, alongside an image of Baldock.
Northampton Town, where Baldock had a loan spell in 2011, shared on X (formerly Twitter): “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31.
“George made five appearances for us in 2011 before going on to play for Oxford United and Sheffield United. Our sincerest condolences go to George’s family and friends.”
Local reports suggest that Baldock was found unresponsive in a swimming pool, and an investigation is currently underway.
