Both Groups In The Rainbow Nation Have Voiced Opposite Stances Towards The War In Ukraine

A survey conducted in South Africa has found that black South Africans are in favour of the ANC government and EFF leaders supporting Russia, whilst Afrikaners and Rhodesians in South Africa support Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Some have gone so far as to travel to Ukraine to serve in the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, with an estimated 700 Afrikaners and 130 Rhodesians making the trek to Kiev in order to join the fight against Russia.

Since the end of Apartheid in 1994, South Africa has aligned themselves with Russia and China on foreign policy and trade, with such behavior culminating with them joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) economic alliance in 2010.

The war in Ukraine which has lasted five months now, has left many to pick a side or review their current trade agreements with Russia and China.

South Africa was no different, though ultimately choosing to stick by with their BRICS partners amid war crimes being committed by Russian forces in Bucha and the Donbas.

Afrikaner and Rhodesian groups in Pretoria and Johannesburg staged Pro-Ukraine protests earlier this year to oppose the ANC's support of the war, which was quashed by local police, leading to the arrests of 14 activists and the accidental death of one man due to being hit in the head with a tear gas grenade at full force.

The domestic tensions over Ukraine has also led to international tensions over Ukraine to face the South African government, as the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, holds talks with South Africa's Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, in Pretoria over the country's stance on Ukraine.
