Apple is reportedly among the investors participating in a major funding round for OpenAI, the leading organization in artificial intelligence research.
Apple Eyes Major Investment in OpenAI to Shape AI Future
AFP has reported that Apple, the prominent technology company known for its iPhone, is in negotiations to invest in OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT and a major player in generative artificial intelligence.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple, co-founded by Steve Jobs, is engaging in discussions as OpenAI seeks to raise funds to support the high costs associated with developing new technology. The company aims to achieve a valuation of $100 billion in this funding round, which is being led by Thrive Capital, which plans to invest one billion dollars.
Reports have suggested for several months that OpenAI is seeking significant capital to become one of the most valuable technology companies in the world.
Microsoft, which is OpenAI’s largest investor and receives half of the startup's profits, is also involved in this funding round.
If confirmed, Apple’s potential investment in OpenAI would coincide with the company's upcoming announcement of new iPhones on September 9, which are expected to feature advanced AI capabilities. In June, Apple announced that OpenAI’s technology would be available in the software for its high-end iPhones, with the option to use AI tools from other companies in the future.
Apple did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.
Bloomberg later reported that Apple is indeed in talks and noted that Nvidia has also discussed participating in the funding round.
