In recent months, Germany has witnessed a series of violent attacks targeting politicians, a disturbing trend that has evoked memories of the country's Nazi past.

A Black politician from the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party was injured in a racial attack in the eastern city of Cottbus, as reported by public broadcaster RBB on Friday.

Adeline Abimnwi Awemo, who was hanging up election posters, was racially insulted and physically assaulted by a woman on Thursday evening, according to the CDU state party. The politician, of African origin and holding German citizenship, sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Reacting to the racial assault, CDU state chairman Jan Redmann expressed shock, stating, "The increasing risk faced by individuals engaged in political activities for our country is intolerable."

Born in Cameroon, Awemo sits on the Advisory Board for Integration and Migration in Cottbus. She is also standing as a direct candidate for the CDU in the southern Cottbus constituency in the upcoming state elections.

Recent violent incidents involving politicians in Germany, including an attack on a Member of the European Parliament in Dresden, have unsettled many Germans. These incidents have sparked a national conversation about the escalating political climate, with some drawing comparisons to the political violence of Germany's past, particularly during the Nazi era.

Hendrik Wust, the conservative Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, described the recent attacks as reminiscent of the darkest period in German history in an interview on German public television.
