South Africa has detained 95 Libyans following a raid on a farm that appeared to have been used as a military camp. Police spokesman Donald Mdhluli announced on Friday that the detainees were being questioned after the operation, which took place in the morning near Witbank, located in the northeastern province of Mpumalanga, approximately 360 kilometers (220 miles) east of Johannesburg.

Mdhluli confirmed to AFP that "ninety-five Libyans have been taken in after a raid." He added, "The site was purportedly a training camp for a security company, but it resembles a military base."

The owner of the security company was identified as a South African national, though Mdhluli did not provide additional details. "We are not arresting them at this moment, but we are detaining them for questioning and will investigate any potential criminal activities," Mdhluli said.

Television footage from the scene showed a significant police presence outside the suspected camp, which featured green military-style tents and sandbags. The affiliation of the Libyans with any particular group was not immediately clear.

Libya has been grappling with instability and conflict since the 2011 ousting of longtime leader Moamer Kadhafi. Although the country has experienced some relative calm in recent years, periodic clashes between armed groups continue.
