Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein has been rushed to hospital after contracting double pneumonia and Covid-19.

The convicted sex offender, 72, is at the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward receiving treatment for a "myriad" of health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and spinal stenosis.

Weinstein is awaiting a retrial for sexual assault charges in New York. In March 2020, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of third-degree rape and a first-degree sex assault. However, in April, this conviction was overturned by the New York Court of Appeals, which ruled that he had not received a fair trial.

Additionally, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in February for another rape and sex assault conviction in Los Angeles.

Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s spokesman, said in a statement: “Craig Rothfeld, Mr Weinstein’s authorised representative and prison consultant, confirms that Mr Weinstein has been brought back to the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward to be treated for the myriad of health conditions he continues to suffer from daily, including diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid on his heart and lungs, and various other conditions.

“Furthermore, Mr Weinstein has tested positive for Covid-19 and contracted double pneumonia in his lungs.”

The statement concluded: “We continue to express our gratitude to the officers, doctors, and nurses at DOCS, CHS, and NYC H+H who ensured Mr Weinstein was immediately transferred to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward and will continue to work closely with them to ensure Mr Weinstein receives proper medical treatment.”

He was previously transferred to the hospital in April after complaining of chest pains. He spent nine days at the facility, where he had access to a phone and TV, before being returned to prison on Rikers Island.
