France would be hosting the Winter Olympics for the fourth time, following previous games in Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968, and Albertville in 1992. Meanwhile, Salt Lake City, Utah, was also selected to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.

The French Alps have been provisionally selected as the host for the 2030 Winter Olympics, as announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday. The decision is contingent upon French President Emmanuel Macron signing a commitment to ensure funding and security measures by October 1.

"I confirm the full commitment of the French nation, and assure you that I will ask the next prime minister to include not only this guarantee but also an Olympic Law in the priorities of the new government," Macron stated during the IOC session.

The French Alps secured the bid with 84 out of 88 votes, with assurances on finances and security provided by the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur regions involved in the bid. However, the IOC will only finalize the host city contract once these guarantees are formally delivered.

This would mark France's fourth time hosting the Winter Games, following Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968, and Albertville in 1992. The decision comes ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, and reflects the IOC's streamlined selection process, which no longer involves visiting multiple candidate cities but instead confirms a preferred bid through a formal vote.

In a related development at the same IOC session, Salt Lake City in Utah, USA, was chosen to host the 2034 Winter Olympics, as reported by the Associated Press.
