Following the assault on a centre-left lawmaker in the eastern city of Dresden, police have announced the identification and search of the residences of three additional teenage suspects. On Sunday, a 17-year-old voluntarily surrendered to the police.

Investigators stated on Monday that they had identified three additional suspects following an assault on the European lawmaker Matthias Ecke and a Green Party campaign worker in Dresden.

Ecke, a member of the European Parliament for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD), was attacked by four assailants while displaying EU election posters in Dresden on Friday night, as reported by the police.

After a 17-year-old voluntarily surrendered to the police, the residences of three other suspects were subsequently searched.

During the inquiry, two more suspects were initially identified, prompting searches of their residences early on Sunday evening under the directive of the Dresden District Court.

On Sunday, a fourth suspect was identified, leading to a late evening search of their residence. Investigators reported seizing evidence, which is now under evaluation. All four individuals are reportedly aged either 17 or 18.

A spokesperson for the state police confirmed that the searches were conducted in Dresden and the surrounding area. The operation involved officers from various units, including police counter-terrorism, extremism, and riot police.

Investigators purportedly traced the three additional suspects by analysing evidence seized from the 17-year-old who admitted involvement.

The 41-year-old Ecke, who heads the SPD's European election list in the Saxony region, was knocked down while erecting posters ahead of the June elections. Described as "seriously injured," he required surgery following the assault, according to his party.

Chancellor Scholz joined the chorus of condemnation against the attack, describing it as a threat to democracy.

Ecke was the most recent political figure to be targeted in Germany. Prior to his attack, police reported that a 28-year-old man, who was putting up posters for the Greens, had been subjected to physical assault earlier on the same Dresden street, enduring punches and kicks.

In reaction to these acts of violence, thousands of demonstrators assembled in the streets of Dresden and Berlin on Sunday to denounce right-wing extremism and political violence.

According to police on Sunday, the 17-year-old who initially came forward had no prior criminal record and had not yet provided a statement regarding the motive behind the offence.
