Mexican authorities are currently examining three deceased individuals, discovered in close proximity to the area where two Australians and a US national were reported missing. This region has been affected by cartel violence.

Three bodies were discovered in Mexico's Baja California State on Friday, amidst the disappearance of two Australians and an American during a surfing excursion in an area plagued by cartel violence.

"The FBI's San Diego office confirms the discovery of three deceased individuals in Santo Tomas, Baja California," stated a release. However, the victims were not identified by the agency.

Mexican forensic experts and emergency responders were engaged in recovering evidence at the scene on Friday, as per an anonymous source from the state prosecutors' office, reported by the Associated Press.

The location is in proximity to Santo Tomás township, south of Ensenada — the region where local media indicated the discovery of three bodies. Mexican news sources mentioned that the bodies were found near the area where three foreigners were reported missing the previous week.

Jake and Callum Robinson, Australian brothers, along with their American friend Jack Carter, have been missing since April 27. They were on a surfing and camping trip near the coastal city of Ensenada in the northwestern state of Baja California.

Their mother, Debra Robinson, shared on Facebook that the trio never made it to their planned accommodation in the area.

The city of Ensenada is situated 30 miles (45 kilometers) away from where the bodies of the three individuals were discovered.

On Thursday, authorities in Baja California state disclosed that three Mexican citizens were undergoing questioning regarding the disappearances.

María Elena Andrade Ramírez, the chief state prosecutor, refrained from indicating whether the individuals under interrogation were deemed potential suspects or witnesses in the investigation. Nevertheless, she noted that some had direct connections to the case.

Additionally, Andrade Ramírez stated that evidence linked to the three individuals being questioned was discovered along with the deserted tents earlier that day.

"Andrade Ramírez stated on Thursday, 'A working team is currently at the site where the individuals were last seen, where tents and other evidence were found that could potentially be linked to the three people we have under investigation.'

She added, 'There is a lot of important information that we cannot disclose at this time. We are uncertain about their condition.'

Acknowledging the presence of drug cartels in the region, she emphasized, 'All lines of investigation remain open until we locate them.'

The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the Australian and US consulates.

Baja California, renowned for its picturesque beaches, also grapples with high levels of violence due to organized crime cartel activities."
