Sani, aged 22, was the victim in the case. Geng-Quangrong claimed self-defense, which the court rejected. Prior to the incident, he had spent over N60 million on Sani, who later married someone else.

A Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, was sentenced to death by hanging by a Kano High Court for fatally stabbing his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, 22. Frank, residing in Railway Quarters Kano, was found guilty of culpable homicide in a one-count charge.

Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji, in delivering the judgment, affirmed that the prosecution had convincingly established its case.

"The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty," stated Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji during the trial.

"I hereby recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict," the judge added.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, informed the court that the convict committed the offence on Sept. 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters Kano. He said on the same date, at about 9 p.m., the convict stabbed the deceased with a knife in her house situated at Janbulo Quarters Kano for undisclosed reasons.

"The victim was hurried to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano, where a medical doctor confirmed her death," revealed the prosecutor.

Despite the charge, the defendant pleaded not guilty. The prosecution called upon six witnesses and presented four exhibits to substantiate their case.

Citing section 221(b) of the Penal Code, the prosecutor outlined the offence's contravention.

In defense, counsel Muhummad Dan’azumi introduced the defendant and one witness, along with five exhibits.

Dan’azumi urged the court to recommend the defendant for prerogative of mercy pursuant to section 313 of ACJL.

During his testimony, Frank asserted, "I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defense after she grabbed my testes." He appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy in its judgment.

Following the judgment, the victim's mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, expressed satisfaction with the judge’s decision in a statement to the newsmen.

Vanguard reported on how Frank Geng-Quangrong disclosed in a Kano High Court that he had spent over N60 million on his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, a 22-year-old native of Kano.

"I transferred over N60 million to her GT Bank account, N18 million for her to start a business, N4 million for a house, and N6 million for university education, among others," he revealed.

Frank further explained, "Whenever I go to pick her up for dinner at home, her mum always welcomes me with open arms."

He recounted to the court that in February 2022, the deceased married someone else. "I was heartbroken and disappointed, so I relocated to Abuja," he said. "She kept calling me and chatting with me on Whatsapp and continued demanding money."
