Early Sunday morning, a deadly shooting at Buford's Backyard Beer Garden, a popular bar located in the entertainment district of Austin, left three people dead and fourteen others injured, including three in critical condition. Authorities reported that the gunman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was among those killed during the incident.
According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, police received reports of a “male shooting at Buford’s” and responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, officers confronted the suspect, who was armed, and returned fire, killing him. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived within 57 seconds of the first call at 1:39 a.m. local time and began treating victims on-site, demonstrating an exceptionally rapid response. EMS Chief Robert Luckritz confirmed that three victims were found dead at the scene.
FBI special agent Alex Doran indicated that while the motive behind the attack remains unclear, investigators found evidence in the suspect’s vehicle and on his person suggesting a “potential nexus to terrorism.” He emphasized that the agency is currently prepared to describe the incident as potentially an act of terrorism, though further investigation is ongoing to determine the specifics.
Police reported that the suspect drove past the bar multiple times before opening fire from his vehicle. After parking, he continued the attack on foot, shooting at patrons inside and outside the establishment. Authorities said the suspect’s movements indicate a deliberate and targeted attack, heightening concerns about the potential for terrorism.
The swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel was praised by Kirk Watson, who stated that the rapid arrival of officers and paramedics likely prevented additional casualties. Police maintained a strong presence in the neighborhood, which contributed to the quick containment of the situation as nearby bars were closing for the night. Mayor Watson expressed gratitude for the professionalism and speed of the public safety teams, emphasizing that their prompt actions saved lives during the chaotic and dangerous event.
