Pope Leo has urged global media to reject “click-bait” journalism and uphold truth in the age of artificial intelligence, warning that technology must never replace human judgment and moral responsibility.
Pope Leo Calls on Media to Resist ‘Click-Bait’ Journalism and Defend Human Truth in the Age of AI

Pope Leo has issued a powerful appeal to global news organisations, urging them to resist the lure of “click-bait” journalism and recommit to truth and integrity in an era increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence.
Speaking from the Vatican on Thursday, the pontiff warned that the rapid integration of AI into media production risks undermining human judgment and eroding trust in journalism. He cautioned that technology, while a valuable tool, “must never replace the conscience, empathy, and responsibility that only human beings can bring to storytelling.”
Pope Leo praised journalists covering conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, describing their work as acts of courage in defence of truth. He also renewed calls for the release of imprisoned reporters worldwide, saying that “no journalist should ever be silenced for seeking or speaking the truth.”
The Pope’s remarks come amid growing global concern over misinformation, deepfakes, and the ethical use of AI in newsrooms. Media watchdogs have warned that the pressure to generate traffic through sensationalism and algorithms often compromises accuracy and public trust.
Leo emphasised that journalism must prioritise facts over speed and empathy over engagement metrics. “In an age ruled by algorithms and outrage,” he said, “truth must remain human-made — born of discernment, compassion, and moral courage.”
His message was welcomed by press freedom advocates, who said the Vatican’s intervention adds moral weight to ongoing debates about AI regulation and ethical media practices. “The Pope’s words remind us that integrity is journalism’s most enduring technology,” one campaigner said.
As AI continues to transform how stories are produced and consumed, Pope Leo’s call stands as both a warning and a challenge — to protect not just the truth, but the humanity behind it.
