The body of one of two US soldiers who went missing during the African Lion 2026 military exercise in southern Morocco has been recovered from the sea, according to Moroccan authorities. The soldiers disappeared near the Atlantic coast during the multinational drill led by AFRICOM. A large search involving US, Moroccan, and allied forces is still ongoing for the second soldier. Officials believe the incident was likely accidental, possibly a fall into the sea.

The body of one of two US soldiers who went missing during a multinational military training exercise in southern Morocco has been recovered, according to a statement from the Moroccan army, while search efforts continue for the second serviceman.
The two soldiers went missing last Saturday during the African Lion 2026 exercise, one of the largest annual joint military drills conducted on the African continent. The exercise is led by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in partnership with Moroccan forces and several other African and allied nations. It brings together thousands of troops and defence specialists to conduct coordinated operations across land, air, and maritime environments, with the aim of improving interoperability, crisis response, and regional security cooperation.
The incident occurred near a cliff along Morocco’s Atlantic coastline in the Cap Draa Training Area, a rugged coastal zone used for complex military training scenarios. After the soldiers were reported missing, a large-scale search and rescue operation was immediately launched involving US military personnel, Moroccan armed forces, and allied partners participating in the exercise.
According to AFRICOM, the search effort has been extensive, covering more than 8,000 square kilometres (over 3,000 square miles) of coastal waters and surrounding terrain. The operation has included over 10 aircraft, maritime units, Moroccan cave-diving specialists, and an unmanned underwater vehicle deployed to scan difficult-to-access areas beneath the water and along the coastline.
On Sunday, the Moroccan army confirmed that the body of one of the missing soldiers had been recovered from the sea the previous day. The remains were transported to a military hospital, where they are being processed in preparation for repatriation to the United States. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending official notification of family members.
A US military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested that preliminary assessments point to an accidental fall into the sea, rather than any hostile or terrorist activity. While investigations are ongoing, early indications reportedly support the view that the incident was not the result of an attack.
Search operations for the second soldier continue, with coordinated efforts between US and Moroccan forces still focused on both coastal waters and surrounding terrain. Military officials have stressed that all available resources remain committed to locating the missing serviceman.
African Lion 2026 involves approximately 5,000 troops from more than 40 countries, making it one of the most significant multinational military exercises in the region. The exercise typically includes complex field training, amphibious operations, live-fire drills, and command-post simulations designed to strengthen cooperation between participating militaries.
Authorities have not yet indicated when the search will conclude, but have confirmed that operations will continue until all possibilities of locating the second soldier have been exhausted.
