Coal Mine Explosion in Sutatausa Kills Nine
An explosion inside a coal mine in Colombia has left nine workers dead, according to the country’s National Mining Agency. The incident occurred on Monday at the La Ciscuda mine in the municipality of Sutatausa, located in Cundinamarca, about 72 kilometres north of Bogota.
The mine, which is legally operated, had 15 workers underground at the time of the explosion. Authorities reported that six miners were rescued and taken to a regional hospital for treatment, while three others managed to escape on their own shortly after the blast.
Preliminary findings from the National Mining Agency indicate that a buildup of gases, including methane, was the likely cause of the explosion. The agency revealed that during an inspection visit on April 9, it had already detected dangerous gas accumulations at the site and warned that they posed a serious risk if not properly managed.
Officials said the mine had been advised to strengthen its safety measures following the inspection. The agency noted that coal mines are particularly vulnerable to the accumulation of methane gas and coal dust, both of which can trigger powerful explosions if safety systems are inadequate.
There was no immediate response from Carbonera Los Pinos, the company responsible for operating the mine, regarding the incident or the earlier safety recommendations.
Rescue efforts were quickly launched, with emergency teams working at the site to assist survivors and recover victims. Images shared by Cundinamarca Governor Jorge Emilio Rey showed ambulances stationed at the mine entrance as operations continued.
Mining accidents remain a recurring issue in Colombia, often linked to poor ventilation systems and inadequate safety enforcement. As one of the world’s major producers and exporters of coal, particularly thermal coal supplied to markets in Europe and Latin America, the country continues to face challenges in ensuring safety standards across its mining sector.
