Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed bilateral relations and global security issues in a phone call, focusing on defence cooperation, Middle East tensions, the Gaza peace process, and regional stability. Erdogan stressed protecting ceasefires, advancing Gaza peace efforts, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while both leaders emphasized continued diplomatic engagement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held a telephone discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations as well as addressing a wide range of regional and international developments, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
During the conversation, the two leaders reviewed the state of relations between Türkiye and France and explored areas where cooperation could be expanded. Erdogan particularly emphasised that deepening collaboration, especially in the defence industry, would be mutually beneficial and could further enhance strategic ties between the two NATO members. He also pointed to the importance of maintaining dialogue despite differences on certain regional issues.
Erdogan raised concerns about the broader global security environment, noting that tensions triggered by recent developments involving Iran have had negative effects on international stability. He acknowledged the role of diplomatic engagement in achieving a ceasefire and credited Türkiye and other international actors for supporting efforts that helped de-escalate the situation.
At the same time, he warned that the ceasefire remains fragile and stressed the importance of protecting it. He cautioned against any actions or initiatives that could undermine or “sabotage” the truce, particularly referencing ongoing tensions and reported incidents in Lebanon, which he said could further destabilise the region if not carefully managed.
The Turkish leader also highlighted the urgency of advancing the second phase of the Gaza peace plan, stating that momentum gained in earlier negotiations should not be allowed to fade. He reiterated Türkiye’s readiness to continue contributing to diplomatic and humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting peace and stability in the region.
In addition, the leaders discussed broader geopolitical issues, including the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law. They also exchanged views on the situation in Syria, efforts to promote stability in the Caucasus region, and ongoing international initiatives aimed at reviving negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to achieve a lasting peace settlement.
Both presidents reportedly underscored the need for sustained diplomatic engagement and cooperation in addressing these complex challenges, as well as the importance of avoiding further escalation in already tense regions.
