A Berlin court sentenced four men linked to a Hamas-affiliated cell to 4½–6 years for stockpiling weapons intended for attacks on Israeli, Jewish, and other targets across Europe. The men, born in Lebanon with Egyptian and Dutch citizenship among them, were arrested in December 2023 following intelligence tips after Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel. Investigations revealed weapons caches in several European countries, and additional suspects have been arrested in connection with arms procurement for Hamas.

A court in Berlin has handed down prison sentences ranging from four and a half to six years to four men who were linked to an underground cell associated with Hamas. The men were convicted of stockpiling weapons for potential terrorist attacks across Europe, with specific planned targets in Germany. The case was heard by the Berlin State Protection Senate, part of the Berlin Court of Appeal, which determined that the men had acted as foreign operatives for Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, and had accumulated firearms caches in several European countries.
The convicted men, aged between 36 and 58, were found guilty of membership in a foreign terrorist organization and other related criminal offenses. Prosecutors presented evidence showing that the men had organized weapons stockpiles intended for long-term use in terrorist operations targeting Israeli, Jewish, and other potential sites across Europe. Locations identified by investigators included Poland, Bulgaria, and Denmark. Specific potential targets mentioned in the proceedings included the Israeli embassy in Berlin, the US Ramstein Air Base, and the area around Berlin’s disused Tempelhof Airport.
While the defendants denied membership in Hamas, the primary accused admitted to visiting one of the arms caches in Bulgaria but claimed his visit was related to private arms trading rather than terrorist activity. All four men were born in Lebanon, with one holding Egyptian citizenship and another a Dutch passport. Three had spent the majority of their lives in Germany, while the fourth resided mainly in the Netherlands. They were arrested in December 2023 and have remained in custody throughout the legal proceedings.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office stated that the arrests followed intelligence provided by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution shortly after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In the months following, authorities arrested additional suspects connected to alleged arms procurement for Hamas in multiple locations, including Berlin, London, the German-Czech border, the German-Danish border, and at Berlin Airport upon arrival from Lebanon.
According to prosecutors, the weapons collected by these individuals were intended for use in attacks on Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany and across Europe over an extended period. The court agreed with the prosecution that the men were acting as part of a broader network of foreign operatives connected to Hamas, confirming the serious security threat posed by the group.
Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by many countries, including the United States, Israel, and Germany. The case highlights ongoing concerns about the group’s attempts to extend its influence and conduct terrorist operations in Europe, as well as the vigilance of European security and intelligence agencies in monitoring and disrupting such plots.
