Zambia has declared seven days of national mourning for former President Edgar Lungu, who died on 5th June 2025. A state funeral will be held, and citizens are urged to suspend entertainment during the mourning period.
Zambia Declares 7 Days of National Mourning for Former President Lungu





The Government of the Republic of Zambia has declared a seven-day period of national mourning following the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died in South Africa on Thursday, 5th June 2025.
President Hakainde Hichilema has accorded a State Funeral to the late leader in recognition of his immense contribution to the nation as the Sixth President of the Republic. The period of national mourning will begin on Sunday, 8th June and continue through Saturday, 14th June 2025, in accordance with official protocol for former Republican Presidents.
The late President’s body is expected to arrive in Zambia on Wednesday, 11th June 2025. A funeral gathering will be held at Belvedere Lodge, along Leopards Hill Road in Kabulonga, Lusaka.
Members of the public are urged to observe the mourning period with dignity by suspending all entertainment and leisure activities between 06:00 and 18:00 hours. During this time, national flags will fly at half-mast.
The Cabinet Office has assured the nation that further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. President Lungu is remembered for his service and contributions to governance and national development.
