Qatar has sent aid trucks to Sudan, delivering medicines as part of a $3.6 million humanitarian effort to help half a million people amid the ongoing war, ensuring supplies reach medical centers despite the crisis.
Qatar Sends Humanitarian Aid to Sudan Amid Ongoing War
A convoy from Qatar has set off for Sudan to deliver crucial humanitarian aid in response to the escalating crisis caused by the ongoing war in the country. The convoy, consisting of seven trucks loaded with emergency and life-saving medicines, represents the first phase of Qatar’s assistance and is part of a coordinated effort between the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS). Officials said the aid aims to address urgent medical needs and alleviate suffering among the civilian population, which has been severely affected by the conflict.
Fatima Jaber Al-Ahbabi, Acting Deputy Director General of the Development Projects Sector at QFFD, told TRT Afrika that Qatar intends to send a total of 70 shipping containers carrying food and medical supplies worth over QAR 13.3 million ($3.6 million). She noted that the aid is expected to benefit at least half a million people across 12 Sudanese states. Al-Ahbabi described the initiative as a vital continuation of Qatar’s long-standing humanitarian commitment to the Sudanese people, particularly given the unprecedented challenges facing the country’s health sector due to the ongoing conflict and the worsening humanitarian situation.
“This shipment, which left Qatar on Monday, marks the beginning of a broader aid program, with additional consignments expected in the coming weeks,” Al-Ahbabi said, emphasizing QFFD’s commitment to ensuring that medical assistance is delivered efficiently and systematically. She highlighted the importance of coordinated humanitarian efforts to reach those most in need and to mitigate the impact of the crisis on vulnerable populations.
Mohamed Bader Al-Sada, Assistant Secretary-General for Relief and International Development at QRCS, told TRT Afrika that the organization is fully prepared to implement this expanded aid project through its representative office in Sudan. Drawing on its field experience and logistical expertise, QRCS will work closely with local authorities to ensure that the aid reaches the intended recipients safely and effectively. Al-Sada explained that the initiative involves overland transport of medicines from Qatar to designated reception points in Sudan, followed by distribution to medical supply centers and targeted health facilities. He stressed that the project is designed to guarantee fair and immediate delivery of supplies, helping to maintain continuity of healthcare services despite the ongoing security challenges.
The humanitarian situation in Sudan has deteriorated sharply since 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions of people to flee their homes, creating widespread displacement and hardship. The Qatari aid effort is part of a broader international response aimed at alleviating suffering and supporting essential health services in areas most affected by the fighting. Officials from QFFD and QRCS expressed confidence that the ongoing shipments would provide critical support to healthcare facilities, help sustain medical services, and assist in addressing urgent health needs in a country facing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the region.
