An Inter Milan supporter has reportedly suffered life-changing injuries after throwing a firecracker at Cremonese goalkeeper Emil Audero during Sunday’s Serie A fixture.
Inter fan suffers life-changing injuries after throwing firecracker at goalkeeper
The disturbing incident took place early in the second half at the Giovanni Zini Stadium, with Inter already leading 2–0 thanks to goals from Lautaro Martínez and Piotr Zieliński. A loud explosion was heard on the live broadcast, followed by smoke close to Audero, who immediately fell to the ground.
Play was halted as players and medical staff rushed to check on the goalkeeper. Inter players Federico Dimarco, Martínez and Alessandro Bastoni, along with head coach Cristian Chivu, were seen confronting travelling supporters in the away end.
There were initial concerns that Audero had been seriously injured by the blast. However, the 29-year-old Indonesia international — who spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Inter — was able to continue after treatment, despite sustaining a minor cut and burn to his leg.
Fan sustains severe injuries following second explosion
While Audero escaped serious harm, the supporter responsible did not. According to Corriere della Sera, the Inter ‘ultra’ suffered severe injuries after a second explosive device detonated in his hand moments later.
Reports claim the individual lost several fingers in the blast before being confronted by fellow supporters in the stands. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital and is expected to be arrested once discharged.
Inter president Beppe Marotta strongly condemned the incident following the match.
“This was a senseless act that has absolutely nothing to do with the values of sport,” Marotta said.
“The authorities are investigating and it appears to have been an isolated incident. The individual responsible will be identified.
“Audero’s professionalism should also be highlighted — he got back to his feet immediately and completed the match. But our condemnation must be total and unequivocal.”
Defender Alessandro Bastoni also voiced his disgust at the events.
“It’s neither fair nor humane,” he said. “These things should never happen. There is already enough violence in everyday life — football should represent healthy competition.”
At present, it remains unclear whether Inter will face disciplinary action as a result of their supporter’s behaviour.
Despite the incident overshadowing the match, Inter secured victory and now sit eight points clear of second-placed AC Milan after 23 Serie A games.
