Over 1,000 residents fled Ankpechi community in Benue State after suspected bandits attacked the area. Security forces have been deployed as authorities work to restore order amid growing insecurity in the state.
Over 1,000 Residents Flee After Bandit Attack on Benue Community
More than 1,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes after suspected armed bandits attacked Ankpechi community in Benue State, Nigeria, in the latest wave of violence affecting the country's food-producing region.
The attack has left families displaced, heightened fears among neighbouring communities and renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Benue.
GUNMEN STORM COMMUNITY
According to local authorities, the attackers invaded Ankpechi community in Oglewu District of Ohimini Local Government Area early on Thursday morning.
The armed men reportedly entered the community unexpectedly, causing panic as residents fled for their lives.
Many families abandoned their homes and personal belongings while seeking safety in nearby communities.
THOUSANDS FORCED TO FLEE
Local officials said more than 1,000 people have been displaced by the attack.
The affected residents are currently taking refuge in neighbouring towns and villages while awaiting improvements in the security situation.
Community leaders fear that many of those displaced may be unable to return home soon if the violence continues.
AUTHORITIES DEPLOY SECURITY FORCES
Ohimini Local Government Chairman Gabriel Adole confirmed the attack and said security personnel had been deployed to the affected area.
According to him, the presence of security operatives is aimed at preventing further attacks and restoring calm to the community.
Authorities have also begun assessing the situation to determine the extent of the damage caused by the assault.
ATTACK FOLLOWS RECENT VIOLENCE
The latest incident comes only days after similar attacks in neighbouring Otukpo Local Government Area.
In one of the previous attacks, armed assailants reportedly set houses on fire, forcing more residents to flee.
The repeated attacks have increased anxiety across several communities in southern Benue State.
BENUE CONTINUES TO FACE GROWING INSECURITY
Benue State has experienced repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years.
The violence has resulted in numerous deaths, widespread destruction of homes and the displacement of thousands of residents.
Many rural communities continue to live under constant fear of fresh attacks.
FARMING ACTIVITIES DISRUPTED
Benue is widely regarded as one of Nigeria's major agricultural states because of its large food production.
However, persistent insecurity has disrupted farming activities, forcing many farmers to abandon their farmlands.
Humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned that continued violence could worsen food insecurity and deepen the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Authorities continue to call for stronger security measures as residents hope for lasting peace and the safe return of displaced families.
