Ebonyi Police Order Autopsy Over Nurse's Death at Umahi's Residence

The Ebonyi State Police Command has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death of 26-year-old nurse Mary Habila, who died at the country home of Works Minister David Umahi in Uburu. Police say investigations are ongoing and have urged the deceased's family to cooperate with the post-mortem examination to establish the exact circumstances surrounding her death.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has ordered a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death of a 26-year-old nurse, Miss Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the country home of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing and have appealed to the deceased's family to cooperate with the planned autopsy.

NURSE REPORTEDLY DIED DURING OFFICIAL ASSIGNMENT

According to the police, Mary Habila was a member of the medical team attached to the Minister of Works and had travelled with him to his hometown in Uburu.
Preliminary findings indicate that she died inside a room within the compound of the minister's residence before she was taken to the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital in Uburu.
Medical personnel later confirmed that she was brought to the hospital dead.

POLICE LAUNCH FULL INVESTIGATION

The Command's spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the Divisional Police Officer of Ohaozara Division received a distress call on June 27, 2026, regarding the medical emergency.
After confirming the incident at the hospital, the matter was immediately reported to the Commissioner of Police, who directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
Detectives have since visited the scene and recorded statements from individuals considered relevant to the investigation.

AUTOPSY TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF DEATH

The police said a pathologist would conduct a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of Miss Habila's death.
According to the Command, the autopsy is necessary because of the sensitive nature of the case and will provide scientific evidence to support the ongoing investigation.
Police officials stressed that the examination would help eliminate speculation and ensure that the investigation is based on verified medical findings.
