Former Malawian finance minister Simplex Chithyola has been arrested in Malawi on suspicion of money laundering and abuse of office. Malawi Arrests Former Finance Minister on Money Laundering Charges
Former Malawian finance minister Simplex Chithyola has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and abuse of office in Malawi, according to police authorities. His lawyer, George Kadzipatike, confirmed that the former minister voluntarily turned himself in after learning that investigators were actively seeking him for questioning.
Chithyola, who served as finance minister between 2023 and 2025 under the administration of former President Lazarus Chakwera, is currently facing scrutiny as part of a broader anti-corruption drive targeting senior figures from the previous government. Authorities allege that his conduct during and after his tenure may be linked to financial irregularities and abuse of public office.
He is among several high-profile individuals from the former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration who have come under investigation since the change of government following the September elections. Officials say the ongoing probes are examining allegations of corruption, misuse of state resources, and financial misconduct during their time in office.
Reports indicate that at least eight former cabinet ministers and senior government officials from the previous administration have either been arrested or questioned by law enforcement agencies. These include individuals who previously held key positions in ministries such as trade, agriculture, information, and local government. The pattern of arrests suggests a widening investigation into the activities of the former ruling team.
Among those previously affected is Sosten Gwengwe, who served as finance minister before Chithyola. He was detained earlier in the course of investigations but was later released on bail while inquiries continued. Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation expands.
Chithyola had also drawn public attention during his political career, particularly over displays of wealth during his unsuccessful bid for the position of MCP secretary general. However, he has not publicly responded to the current allegations against him.
Police in Malawi have not yet disclosed when he will appear in court, and the investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to gather evidence related to the case.
