Macron and Ruto Push Africa–France Partnership on Tech, Arts and Youth Development
French President Emmanuel Macron and Kenyan President William Ruto have announced a series of new partnership initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation between Africa and France, with a strong focus on technology, innovation, arts, sports, and youth empowerment.
The announcement came during the Africa Forward Summit held at the University of Nairobi, where both leaders engaged directly with young people, students, artists, and athletes. The event highlighted efforts to deepen cultural exchange and expand economic opportunities across Africa through collaboration with European partners, particularly France.
During his remarks, Macron stressed the importance of Africa and Europe working together to build what he called “strategic autonomy,” meaning reduced dependence on external global powers in key sectors such as technology and innovation. He noted that most major technological solutions today originate from the United States and China, and argued that Africa and Europe have an opportunity to jointly develop their own competitive systems.
He further explained that closer cooperation could help both regions strengthen their economies through shared investment, research, and development. According to him, collaboration would not only improve innovation capacity but also ensure that both continents are better positioned in a rapidly changing global economy.
Macron also emphasized that youth engagement is central to this vision, noting that Africa’s large and growing young population presents a significant opportunity for innovation and entrepreneurship when properly supported through education, funding, and access to technology.
President Ruto echoed these views, highlighting Africa’s demographic advantage as one of its greatest strengths. He told participants that the continent already has a large number of skilled young people, expanding internet access, and a highly entrepreneurial population that is eager to innovate and create jobs.
Ruto added that the future of global development will be driven largely by technology, and urged countries and international partners to invest more in digital infrastructure, skills development, and creative industries across Africa. He said such investments would help unlock Africa’s potential and accelerate economic transformation.
Both leaders also underscored the importance of partnerships in the creative sector, including music, film, and sports, describing them as powerful tools for cultural exchange and economic growth. They said stronger ties between Africa and France could help promote talent development and open new international opportunities for young creatives and athletes.
Overall, the summit reflected a shared commitment by France and Kenya to reposition Africa as a key player in global innovation, while strengthening economic and cultural links between the two regions through long-term cooperation.
