Kenya has recorded 18 deaths from floods and landslides caused by heavy rains. Several areas were affected, with homes and infrastructure damaged, while authorities continue rescue efforts and warn residents to remain alert.
Kenya Floods and Landslides Kill 18 as Heavy Rains Continue
Kenya is grappling with severe flooding and landslides after days of heavy rainfall, with the death toll now confirmed at 18 people, according to the national police service.
Authorities reported that the most affected areas include Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Kiambu counties, where prolonged downpours have saturated the soil, triggering landslides in hilly terrain and flash floods in low-lying communities. Rescue teams have been deployed to the affected regions to assist in recovery operations and search for possible additional victims.
The National Police Service said the ongoing weather conditions remain extremely hazardous, warning that more landslides could occur if the rains continue. Residents in high-risk zones, particularly those living near slopes, riverbanks, and unstable ground, have been urged to evacuate to safer locations where possible.
Beyond the loss of lives, the floods have caused widespread destruction of homes, roads, and bridges, disrupting transportation and cutting off access to some communities. In several areas, motorists have been stranded due to submerged roads, while public infrastructure such as schools and local markets has also been affected.
The flooding comes during the peak of Kenya’s March to May long rains season, which is typically one of the wettest periods of the year. However, officials say the intensity of the current rainfall has exceeded normal levels, increasing the risk of disasters such as landslides and river overflows.
Emergency response teams, including disaster management agencies and local authorities, are continuing evacuation and relief efforts. Humanitarian support is also being mobilized for displaced families who have lost homes and belongings.
Meteorological agencies have warned that more heavy rains are expected in the coming days, raising concerns that the situation could worsen further before conditions improve. Authorities are urging continued vigilance and adherence to safety advisories as efforts continue to prevent additional loss of life.
