At least 18 people were killed after gunmen attacked the Otukpo-Nobi community in Benue State, although police confirmed eight deaths and five injuries. The attack sparked protests by residents demanding better security, while authorities continue investigating the incident.
Gunmen Kill At Least 18 in Benue Community Attack
At least 18 people have been killed after heavily armed gunmen attacked the Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday, leaving several others injured and throwing the community into mourning.
Residents described the assault as one of the deadliest attacks recorded in the area in recent weeks.
GUNMEN STRUCK BEFORE DAWN
According to residents, the attackers invaded the community between about 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. while many people were still asleep.
The gunmen reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, forcing frightened residents to flee for safety.
Many victims were unable to escape before they were shot.
Several houses were deserted as survivors ran into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities.
DIFFERENT CASUALTY FIGURES EMERGE
Residents and local officials said at least 18 people were killed during the attack.
However, the Benue State Police Command released a lower casualty figure.
Police spokesperson Udeme Edet confirmed that eight people died while five others sustained injuries.
She said investigations were still ongoing and that the exact number of casualties would be confirmed after security officials completed their assessment.
ATTACK MAY BE LINKED TO EARLIER INCIDENT
Otukpo Local Government Chairman Maxwell Ogiri suggested that the attack may be connected to the killing of the chairman of the Fulani herders' association about two weeks ago.
He, however, did not provide further details linking the two incidents.
Security agencies have also not officially confirmed any connection between the previous killing and Sunday's attack.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assault.
ANGRY RESIDENTS STAGE PROTEST
Following the killings, women and youths from the affected community took to the streets in protest.
The demonstrators marched through Otukpo town, expressing anger over the repeated attacks and the loss of lives.
They called on the federal and state governments to improve security and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
Many protesters also demanded increased deployment of security personnel to vulnerable communities.
BENUE CONTINUES TO FACE SECURITY CHALLENGES
Benue State has witnessed repeated attacks in recent years, often linked to armed groups and long-standing conflicts between farming communities and herders.
The continued violence has displaced thousands of people, destroyed livelihoods and increased fear among residents.
Security agencies are expected to intensify investigations into the latest attack while increasing patrols in the area to prevent further violence.
Community leaders say lasting peace will require stronger security measures and sustained efforts to address the root causes of the recurring conflict.
