Many Egyptians are struggling with rising prices after the government increased fuel costs, blaming higher global energy prices linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran. The hikes have raised transportation expenses and pushed up the prices of food and other basic goods, affecting both traders and consumers.
Egyptians Struggle With Rising Prices After Fuel Hike
Many Egyptians are worried about rising living costs after the government increased fuel prices, leading to a surge in the cost of everyday goods across the country. Authorities say the increase was necessary because of soaring global energy prices linked to the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran.
The rise in fuel prices has already started affecting transportation and food distribution. El-Sayed Mohamed, a truck driver, said the cost of transporting vegetables has gone up because traders rely on trucks to move goods from wholesalers to markets. According to him, the cost of transporting vegetables has increased to between 3,000 and 4,000 Egyptian pounds, compared with the previous cost of about 2,500 pounds.
The government announced price hikes of up to 30 percent overnight on Monday. The increases affect diesel, natural gas and gasoline, which are widely used for transportation and other economic activities.
Both traders and customers say they are struggling to cope with the sudden increase in prices. Vendors complain that higher costs are discouraging people from buying basic food items, while shoppers say their daily expenses have become harder to manage.
Umm Mohamed, a vegetable seller, said customers are no longer willing to buy goods at the new prices. She explained that when goods are bought cheaply from suppliers, vendors can sell more easily. However, with the new price increases, consumers now carry the burden and demand has dropped because many people cannot afford the higher prices.
Residents have also noticed sharp increases in the cost of basic food items. Nada Hamed, an Egyptian citizen, said prices rose quickly within a day. She noted that the price of a kilogram of cucumbers increased to about 40 Egyptian pounds from the previous price of 15 to 20 pounds. Tomatoes and other essential commodities have also become more expensive.
The fuel price increases were introduced after global oil prices rose to more than 119 dollars per barrel on Monday. The rise in oil prices has been linked to disruptions in shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil transit route. Tankers have reportedly been blocked in the area, which lies between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and is considered one of the world’s most important gateways for oil transportation.
As fuel and transportation costs continue to rise, many Egyptians fear that the prices of food and other basic goods may increase even further, putting additional pressure on households already dealing with economic challenges.
