2027: Wike And APC Governors Clash Over Rainbow Coalition

Nyesom Wike’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid has brought him into conflict with APC governors over his proposed Rainbow Coalition. Wike says politicians can support Tinubu for president while backing other parties in governorship and legislative elections, while APC governors insist on supporting APC candidates at all levels. The disagreement is adding to political tensions as parties and politicians begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.

WIKE DEFENDS RAINBOW COALITION

The political disagreement between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress has intensified ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Wike has continued to defend the “Rainbow Coalition”, a cross-party political platform he says is primarily designed to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
The former Rivers State governor argues that supporting Tinubu for president does not require politicians to abandon their political parties or stop supporting candidates contesting governorship and legislative elections under other platforms.
His position has put him at odds with the APC Governors Forum, which says its members will support APC candidates at all levels and will not endorse political arrangements that could weaken the ruling party.

APC GOVERNORS REJECT COALITION

The disagreement became more pronounced after the APC Governors Forum declared that its members would not participate in, support or endorse any alliance that could undermine Tinubu’s re-election, weaken the APC or negatively affect its candidates.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum, said the governors’ campaign commitment would remain focused on APC candidates.
The governors’ position has been widely interpreted as a rejection of Wike’s approach, particularly because the Rainbow Coalition could involve politicians supporting Tinubu for president while backing candidates from other parties in governorship and legislative contests.

WIKE SAYS PRESIDENTIAL AND OTHER ELECTIONS ARE DIFFERENT

Wike has argued that the APC governors are treating separate elections as though they must all follow the same political arrangement.
He pointed to the experience of the G5 governors ahead of the 2023 election, when five governors from the Peoples Democratic Party opposed the party’s presidential candidate but supported different candidates in other contests.
Wike said the same principle could apply in 2027: politicians could support Tinubu for president while retaining the freedom to support candidates of their choice in state and legislative elections.
He has also maintained that the Rainbow Coalition is not an attempt to take over or weaken the APC.

DISPUTE OVER POLITICAL INFLUENCE

The disagreement has also moved beyond the question of the coalition itself.
Wike has accused some APC governors of opposing the Rainbow Coalition because of their own political interests.
He specifically mentioned Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, alleging that they were among those resisting the coalition.
Wike also alleged that Uzodimma was interested in becoming Senate President after leaving office.
That claim is Wike’s allegation and has not been established as an agreed political arrangement. The disagreement over the coalition is therefore also linked to competing political calculations about positions in the National Assembly after the 2027 elections.

WIKE REJECTS ALLEGED NINE-STATE DEAL

Wike has also dismissed reports that President Tinubu had agreed to concede nine states to the PDP or the Rainbow Coalition as part of a political arrangement ahead of 2027.
He challenged those making the claim to identify the nine states supposedly covered by such an agreement.
The minister said his stated objective was to support Tinubu’s re-election and campaign on what he considers the achievements of the administration.
He cited issues including the administration’s support for state police and what he described as the transfer of more resources and responsibilities to sub-national governments.

WIKE REMAINS IN PDP WHILE SERVING IN APC GOVERNMENT

Another unusual feature of the dispute is Wike’s position within Nigerian politics.
He remains a member and leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party while serving as minister in the APC-led federal government.
Wike has argued that his support for Tinubu does not require the PDP to withdraw its candidates from the 2027 governorship and legislative elections.
This has created a political arrangement in which Wike supports the incumbent president while remaining formally associated with the opposition party.

PDP ALSO BACKS WIKE'S POSITION

The PDP has said there is nothing inherently wrong with Wike remaining a member of the party while supporting Tinubu’s presidential bid through the Rainbow Coalition.
The party's position has added another dimension to the dispute, as the coalition could potentially bring together politicians from different parties around the presidential election while they compete against one another in other contests.
However, some APC figures have rejected Wike’s explanation.
An APC grassroots organisation has accused him of seeking to undermine the ruling party, while APC officials in some states have insisted that the party has its own structures for mobilising support for Tinubu and its candidates. These are political claims from the respective sides rather than independently established findings.

APC SOUTH-EAST CAUCUS BACKS GOVERNORS

The disagreement has also drawn reactions from APC members outside the governors’ forum.
Members of the APC South-East caucus have backed the governors and called on Wike to apologise over comments they regarded as disrespectful.
The caucus said APC governors in the region had demonstrated their ability to mobilise support for Tinubu, including during the 2023 presidential election.
The response shows that the disagreement is no longer limited to Wike and the governors directly involved but is attracting wider reactions within the ruling party.

PARTY LEADERS FACE PRESSURE TO END THE DISPUTE

The continuing disagreement has raised questions about how the competing political structures will operate as the 2027 election approaches.
The APC campaign spokesperson, Ima Niboro, has described the dispute as a disagreement among political allies, arguing that both sides ultimately support Tinubu but differ over how political support should be organised.
There have also been reports that APC officials are considering efforts to broker a truce between Wike and the governors.
The aim would be to prevent the dispute from becoming a larger internal conflict within the political camp supporting Tinubu.
