Real Madrid have reportedly made a major breakthrough in contract negotiations with star winger Vinicius Junior, with the Brazilian now set to sign a new deal. The development marks a significant U-turn for FIFA’s 2024 Best Men’s Player, who had previously been reluctant to commit to the Spanish giants unless his initial demands were met.

Vinicius’ current contract at Los Blancos runs until June 2027. Having joined the club in 2018, the 25-year-old has won three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. He currently earns €18 million per season, but had initially sought a substantial increase to €30 million per season, including performance-related bonuses and a renewal signing bonus.

New Deal in the Works

Real Madrid, however, were unwilling to meet his original terms, offering €20 million per season instead. Negotiations had stalled as a result, compounded by a strained relationship with manager Xabi Alonso. Vinicius had started some matches from the bench, and being substituted on several occasions had caused friction between player and coach.

During last month’s El Clásico, Vinicius’ frustration was evident when he walked straight down to the dressing room after being substituted, ignoring Alonso.

The tension, however, appears to have eased. The pair were recently seen embracing following Real Madrid’s dramatic 4–3 Champions League victory over Olympiacos on Wednesday.

“His performance has been great. I’m very happy with Vini. It hurts that his goal got disallowed; we had worked on that and he deserved to score,” Alonso commented after the match.

Agreement Reached

According to Spain’s Mundo Deportivo, Vinicius has now agreed to accept a revised contract with slightly lower wages. The report suggests he could settle for a deal worth €23 million per season, placing him on a similar salary to Kylian Mbappé.

The newspaper also noted that Vinicius and Alonso have “reconciled face-to-face” following the El Clásico incident, signalling improved relations within the squad.

Real Madrid are expected to move quickly to finalise the agreement before Vinicius becomes free to negotiate with other clubs from 1 January 2027.
