Trent Alexander-Arnold has put to rest speculation among Liverpool supporters that he had been studying Spanish long before his transfer to Real Madrid, clarifying exactly when he began learning the language.

The England international joined the La Liga giants during the summer after the expiry of his contract at Anfield. He is set to return to Liverpool next month when Madrid face the Reds in the Champions League.

During his official unveiling in Madrid, Alexander-Arnold surprised many by speaking near-fluent Spanish, leading some Liverpool fans to believe that he had been learning the language well in advance of his move. However, the right-back has since revealed that he only began lessons in May, with his transfer finalised later that same month.

In a video shared on social media, he explained:

“Hi, I’m Trent. I started learning Spanish with Sara five months ago.

I didn’t speak any Spanish before. I wanted to learn Spanish to communicate better with my teammates, my coach, and the Madrid fans — and to adapt better to the culture.

I really liked the lessons because they were very football-based. The terminology we were learning covered press conferences, interviews, and vocabulary I’d need to speak to my teammates on a day-to-day basis within the club. This helped me very, very much, and I really enjoyed every lesson.”

Alexander-Arnold’s tutor, Sara, also shared her perspective on his learning journey. Writing on social media, the football language instructor praised his dedication:

“Five months. That’s all it took, but it wasn’t easy.

Trent didn’t just learn Spanish. He chose to start from zero, to sound imperfect, to keep showing up day by day.

When he stood on that stage in Madrid and spoke with calm, clarity, and heart, it wasn’t about fluency.

It was about respect, courage, and a genuine desire to belong.

As his language coach, that moment meant everything. Because what I saw wasn’t just a player speaking another language — it was a person growing beyond himself.

In football, words can build trust, connection, and identity. And this is what true professionalism really looks like.”

The 27-year-old has experienced a stop–start beginning to his Madrid career, making only five appearances across all competitions so far due to fitness issues. He made his return to the matchday squad last weekend, appearing as a substitute in El Clásico against Barcelona.

With Dani Carvajal sidelined through injury, Alexander-Arnold could be handed a starting role this weekend. His former club Liverpool will host Real Madrid at Anfield on 4 November.
