The United States suffered a heavy 5–2 defeat to Belgium on Saturday, in what Mauricio Pochettino described as a timely “reality check” ahead of this summer’s World Cup, which they will co-host.
United States Thrashed 5–2 by Belgium in Stark Reality Check Ahead of World Cup
With just 75 days remaining before the tournament, the emphatic loss exposed significant weaknesses in the American side, particularly when tested against elite European opposition.
“I see this as a good reality check for us,” Pochettino said. “Now is the moment to experience this kind of situation so we can improve. We need to improve, of course.”
Bright Start Quickly Unravels
The United States made an encouraging start in front of a packed crowd of 67,000 in Atlanta, taking an early lead through Weston McKennie, who calmly finished from close range.
However, any hopes of a statement victory were short-lived. Belgium, currently ranked ninth in the world, responded emphatically after conceding, turning the game on its head with a ruthless attacking display.
Goals from Zeno Debast, Amadou Onana and Charles De Ketelaere, along with a brace from substitute Dodi Lukebakio, sealed a comprehensive victory for the visitors.
Patrick Agyemang netted a late consolation for the hosts.
Pulisic Calls for Improvement
Christian Pulisic, the AC Milan forward and one of the team’s leading figures, admitted the defeat was difficult but insisted lessons must be learned.
“It was a tough loss,” he said. “They are a very good team, but there are many things we can do better.
“I have to improve. The team has to improve. We have to take this on the chin.”
Belgium Take Control
Despite a relatively even opening period, Belgium gradually asserted their dominance. Winger Jérémy Doku posed a constant threat down the flank, while the United States initially created the clearer chances.
After one effort was denied by goalkeeper Senne Lammens, McKennie capitalised on a subsequent corner delivered by Antonee Robinson to give the hosts the lead.
Belgium responded just before half-time, as Debast struck superbly from distance to level the score with his first international goal.
The second half proved one-sided. Onana finished from close range after a dangerous run from Doku, before De Ketelaere converted a penalty following a handball decision involving Tim Ream — a call Pochettino later disputed.
“For me, it was not a penalty,” the United States manager said, questioning why VAR did not overturn the decision.
Second-Half Collapse
Belgium’s dominance intensified after the hour mark. Lukebakio, introduced as a substitute, made an immediate impact by curling in a fine effort before adding a fifth goal to complete the rout.
A late opportunity allowed Ricardo Pepi to set up Agyemang for a consolation, but by then many home supporters had already begun to leave the stadium.
The final whistle was met with subdued boos from the remaining crowd.
Focus Shifts to World Cup Preparations
The defeat ends a run of three consecutive victories for the United States, including notable wins over Paraguay and Uruguay, and serves as a sobering reminder of the level required ahead of the World Cup.
Pochettino remains optimistic that the setback could prove beneficial in the long term.
“We were very happy after the wins against Uruguay and Paraguay,” he said. “But sometimes it is important to feel this kind of pain.
“It will help shape our approach and how we arrive at the World Cup.”
The United States will face Portugal in another high-profile friendly on Tuesday, before Pochettino names his final squad in May.
