Tottenham Hotspur have suffered another significant blow in their battle to avoid relegation after falling to a 3–1 defeat against Crystal Palace, with a daunting Premier League trip to Liverpool now looming.

Spurs’ hopes of distancing themselves from the relegation zone were further dented following the disappointing result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The defeat leaves the North London side just one point above the drop zone as pressure continues to mount.

Tottenham initially took the lead through Dominic Solanke, raising hopes among the home supporters. However, the momentum quickly shifted before half-time as Crystal Palace staged a strong comeback.

The turning point arrived when defender Micky van de Ven was shown a straight red card for pulling back Palace forward Ismaila Sarr and denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Sarr converted the resulting penalty to level the match before Jørgen Strand Larsen put Palace ahead. Sarr then added another goal to deepen Tottenham’s misery and secure a comprehensive victory for the visitors.

Since taking charge of Spurs on an interim basis until the end of the season, Igor Tudor has now suffered three consecutive defeats, following earlier losses to Arsenal and Fulham. Tottenham’s next fixture is a difficult away encounter against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, 15 March, and they will be without Van de Ven, who must serve a one-match suspension.

Speaking after the defeat, Tudor attempted to remain positive despite the growing pressure.

“I don’t want to speak about the club. I want to be positive,” he said. “After this game I cannot say anything negative to the players. They gave everything. Unfortunately we are punished for every small detail. We pay for every detail.

“If we can call the red card a detail, there is always something to say. With all the problems we have now — missing defenders today and missing the full-backs — these are issues we already know about. I do not want to focus on that, but we need to stay together now.”

The Spurs manager acknowledged the difficulty of the current situation but insisted the team must continue working hard.

“It is very difficult, but we have to keep working, keep believing and continue improving everything,” Tudor added. “I try to help these players because I see them every day and I know they care. They want to perform and they are trying to do so, but sometimes you go through moments like this. What I told them is to stay calm, keep working and the situation will change.”

With Tottenham trailing by two goals at half-time and reduced to ten men, a number of disappointed supporters began leaving the stadium early. Tudor said he understood the fans’ frustration.

“Of course I understand the fans. It is a normal thing that happens in football. They are disappointed and they wanted more from us. We are aware of that. We also wanted to give more, but unfortunately this is a moment where every detail goes against us. One red card changes everything,” he said.

Despite the defeat, Tudor insisted he remains convinced that the team can improve.

“What I am about to say may sound strange, but I believe more after this game than I did before,” he explained. “I saw something. I need to choose the right players because the boat is going in the direction that I want it to go. Those who are in the boat can stay, otherwise they can leave.

“When the other players return and we make the right choices, I am sure we will have a good team again and the victories will return. It is not easy to accept the situation we are in now, but that is the reality.”
