Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion to sign Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke in a deal worth £52 million.

The move would see the central defender reunite with Roberto De Zerbi in north London as Spurs continue their summer rebuild following another difficult Premier League campaign.

Spurs Move to Strengthen Defence

Van Hecke has emerged as one of Tottenham’s key defensive targets as the club seeks to reinforce a back line that has faced criticism in recent seasons.

The 26-year-old currently remains with the Netherlands national team at the FIFA World Cup and featured in Sunday’s dramatic 2–2 draw against Japan.

Despite having one year remaining on his contract at Brighton, reports suggest the defender showed little intention of extending his stay at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton had previously rejected an earlier approach but have now accepted Tottenham’s improved offer.

Reward for Consistent Development at Brighton

Van Hecke joined Brighton from Dutch side NAC Breda in 2020 and steadily developed into one of the Premier League’s more dependable defenders.

Across his spell with the Seagulls, he made 131 appearances and became an important figure within the squad.

Last season, he started 36 of Brighton’s 38 Premier League matches under Fabian Hürzeler as the club secured an eighth-place finish.

That campaign delivered European qualification for only the second time in Brighton’s history and further enhanced Van Hecke’s reputation.

De Zerbi Continues Squad Rebuild

Tottenham’s pursuit of Van Hecke forms part of a wider rebuilding project under De Zerbi.

After successive 17th-place finishes, Spurs have moved quickly in the transfer market in an effort to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.

Scotland defender Andy Robertson has already arrived from Liverpool, while Argentina international Marcos Senesi has also agreed a move from Bournemouth.

The expected addition of Van Hecke would add further experience, composure and defensive stability to a squad seeking significant improvement.

Important Summer Ahead for Spurs

Tottenham’s transfer activity underlines growing ambition to return to competing higher up the Premier League table.

For Van Hecke, the move represents the opportunity to work once again under a manager who knows his qualities well and to take the next step in his career at one of English football’s biggest clubs.

Official confirmation is now expected once the relevant formalities are completed.
