Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital after falling unwell at Old Trafford ahead of Manchester United’s 3–2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.
Sir Alex Ferguson Taken to Hospital After Health Scare at Old Trafford
The former Manchester United manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in football history, had been present at the stadium and was expected to watch the match as Michael Carrick’s side secured a crucial win courtesy of a late goal from Kobbie Mainoo.
However, the 84-year-old was transported to hospital by ambulance as a precaution after experiencing discomfort shortly before kick-off.
What Happened?
Ferguson had been interacting with supporters inside Old Trafford prior to the match and was seen posing for photographs, including one with consultant cardiologist Dr Assem Malhotra.
It is understood that he began to feel unwell in the tunnel area and was assessed by on-site medical staff. Following an initial examination, a decision was made to transfer him to hospital for further checks.
Latest Update on His Condition
Encouragingly, sources close to Ferguson have indicated that he is in good spirits and recovering well.
When contacted by the Press Association, a source described his condition as “okay”, while club officials remain hopeful that he will soon be discharged to continue his recovery at home.
Previous Health Concerns
This is not the first serious health issue Ferguson has faced in recent years. In 2018, he was hospitalised after suffering a brain haemorrhage, from which he made a successful recovery following emergency surgery.
Speaking in the 2021 documentary Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, he reflected on the severity of that incident, describing himself as fortunate to have survived.
The recent health scare is not believed to be related to his previous condition.
Personal Challenges in Recent Years
Ferguson has also experienced personal loss, with his wife of 57 years, Lady Cathy, passing away in 2023 at the age of 84. Additionally, his brother Martin has been diagnosed with dementia.
Reaction from Manchester United
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick admitted that news of Ferguson’s condition had a profound effect on him ahead of the match.
“I don’t know the latest as we stand,” Carrick said after the game. “I heard about it before kick-off and I was very affected by it.
“We all hope he is alright. We are thinking of him and wishing him the very best. Hopefully the result gives him a lift when he hears about it.”
A Football Icon
Ferguson remains a towering figure in the history of Manchester United, having won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two UEFA Champions League trophies during his 26-year tenure at the club.
His presence at Old Trafford continues to be a source of inspiration for players, staff and supporters alike.
