Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry has confirmed he will miss the upcoming World Cup after suffering an adductor muscle tear during training.

The Germany international announced the news via social media on Wednesday, bringing an abrupt end to his hopes of representing his country at the tournament, which begins in June.

Gnabry, who featured in the starting line-up for Germany’s recent international friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana in March, sustained the injury during a penalty training session last week, according to Bayern Munich.

Reacting to the setback, the 28-year-old admitted the development had been difficult to accept, particularly at a crucial stage of both his club and international ambitions.

“The last few days have been tough to process. A FC Bayern season which still holds much to play for after securing another Bundesliga title at the weekend,” Gnabry wrote.

“As for the World Cup dream with the DFB team, that’s sadly over for me. Like the rest of the country, I’ll be supporting the boys from home. Now it’s time to focus on recovery and getting back for pre-season. Thank you for all the messages.”

Bayern Still Chasing Treble Success

Despite Gnabry’s absence, Bayern Munich remain in contention for further silverware this season, having already secured the Bundesliga title.

The German champions are now targeting a treble, with a DFB-Pokal semi-final clash against Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for Wednesday, as well as a UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on 28 April.

Germany Squad Announcement Looms

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann is expected to name his World Cup squad on 12 May.

The national side have been drawn into a group alongside Curaçao, Ecuador and Ivory Coast in the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Gnabry’s absence will undoubtedly come as a significant blow to Germany’s attacking options, given his experience and influence in the squad.
