Chelsea Sack Liam Rosenior After Five Straight Premier League Defeats
Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after a poor run of results, including five straight Premier League defeats, the club announced on Wednesday.
The decision followed a 3–0 loss to Brighton, which marked Chelsea’s fifth consecutive league defeat without scoring a goal, a record the club has not experienced since 1912. The poor run left Chelsea seven points outside the Champions League qualification places.
In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed that Rosenior had been relieved of his duties, praising his professionalism but stating that recent performances “fell below the necessary standards” despite still having much of the season left to play.
His assistant, Calum McFarlane, has been appointed as caretaker manager and will take charge of the team’s upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United on Sunday. The club also said it would begin a process of reflection before making a long-term managerial appointment.
Rosenior had only been in charge for just over three months, having taken over in January after replacing Enzo Maresca, who had been dismissed despite being popular with players. His appointment came after Chelsea’s ownership opted for another managerial change under their ongoing restructuring project.
Although Rosenior initially showed promise, results quickly deteriorated. Chelsea were knocked out of the League Cup and suffered a heavy 8–2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in March, deepening pressure on the coach.
Tensions within the squad also appeared to grow, with reports of strained relationships between players and management. Some senior players had previously questioned club decisions, while disciplinary issues and inconsistent performances added to instability within the team.
Following the Brighton defeat, Rosenior openly criticised his squad, describing the performance as unacceptable and expressing frustration at the lack of fight and consistency. His emotional reaction highlighted growing internal pressure as results continued to decline.
Chelsea, who have spent around £1 billion ($1.35 billion) on transfers since the takeover by American investor Todd Boehly, have struggled to achieve consistent success despite winning the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League in recent seasons.
The club now faces another major rebuild as it searches for a new permanent manager to stabilise performances and revive hopes of qualifying for European competition.
