Real Madrid are reportedly set to postpone the official announcement of Jose Mourinho as the club’s next manager following the unexpected decision to hold presidential elections this summer.
Real Madrid Delay Jose Mourinho Announcement Amid Presidential Election Uncertainty
Club president Florentino Perez is understood to be fully convinced that Mourinho is the ideal figure to guide Real Madrid through what many within the club view as a period of growing internal instability.
The Portuguese coach’s vast experience, strong personality and proven record at the highest level are believed to be key reasons behind Perez’s determination to bring him back to the Santiago Bernabéu.
However, the club’s political situation has now complicated those plans significantly.
Mourinho Announcement Put on Hold
According to reports from Record Portugal, Real Madrid had initially planned to formally unveil Mourinho as head coach on Monday following the conclusion of the 2025/26 La Liga season.
Those plans have now been suspended after businessman Enrique Riquelme officially entered the presidential race, prompting the club’s first contested election since 2006.
The uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the election has reportedly forced Real Madrid to delay any major institutional decisions, including Mourinho’s appointment.
As a result, no official confirmation is expected until the elections have concluded and the club’s presidency is formally resolved.
Should Florentino Perez retain control, Mourinho’s return is expected to move forward immediately afterwards.
Real Madrid Elections Officially Confirmed
Real Madrid’s Election Board confirmed on Sunday that presidential elections will indeed take place this year after Perez’s leadership was formally challenged following nearly two decades in charge of the club.
Despite the unexpected development, there is growing urgency inside the club to resolve the situation quickly, particularly with preparations for next season already underway behind the scenes.
Several key sporting decisions — including managerial appointments, transfer planning and squad restructuring — remain heavily dependent on the outcome of the election process.
Two Possible Dates Under Consideration
At present, two possible dates are reportedly being considered for the presidential vote: May 31 and June 7, both of which fall on a Sunday.
The primary difference between the two options centres around the duration of the candidates’ campaigns.
Holding the election on May 31 would allow the club to resolve the uncertainty more rapidly and accelerate preparations for the new season.
Meanwhile, a June 7 vote would provide challenger Enrique Riquelme with additional time to strengthen his campaign and present his vision for the club’s future.
Regardless of which date is ultimately selected, reports suggest Mourinho’s appointment could still be finalised within the next two weeks, even under the most delayed scenario.
Mourinho Seen as Key Figure in Madrid Rebuild
Despite the current uncertainty, there appears to be strong confidence within sections of the Real Madrid hierarchy that Mourinho remains the leading candidate to take charge of the team.
The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Roma manager previously coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and helping re-establish the club as a major European force during a highly intense period of rivalry with Barcelona.
Now, with Real Madrid searching for stability following a turbulent campaign, Mourinho is once again being viewed as a manager capable of restoring authority, competitiveness and discipline inside the dressing room.
For the moment, however, the club’s political future must be settled before any official announcement can be made.
