Ollie Watkins brought an end to his goal drought as Aston Villa secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory away to Lille in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.
Ollie Watkins Ends Goal Drought to Hand Aston Villa Crucial Europa League Advantage
The England international struck early in the second half to give Unai Emery’s side a valuable advantage heading into the return leg, after a tightly contested encounter at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.
Following a subdued start, it was the hosts who finished the first half the stronger. Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud glanced a header wide before Romain Perraud forced Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez into action with a dipping effort that had to be pushed away.
Villa eventually broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute through Watkins. The striker met a flicked-on long ball inside the penalty area and guided a composed header over Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer, ending a run of eight matches without a goal and marking his first strike since late January.
The visitors nearly doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when Amadou Onana unleashed a curling effort from the edge of the area that struck the angle of the post and crossbar.
Watkins was also involved in a controversial moment moments later. Racing through on goal following a counterattack, he leapt over Ozer as the Lille goalkeeper rushed out to challenge him before tumbling to the turf. Despite Villa’s appeals, the referee waved away claims for a penalty.
Villa, who finished second behind Lyon in the league phase after winning seven matches, held firm during the closing stages to maintain their narrow lead and put themselves in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals.
Neither side had been able to create a decisive opening during the early exchanges in northern France. Villa finally threatened in the 20th minute when Jadon Sancho slipped Morgan Rogers into space on the right side of the penalty area, but his hopeful delivery drifted across the face of goal and beyond the far post.
Onana soon surged forward down the left and delivered a low cross that was intercepted at the crucial moment by Lille defender Aissa Mandi as Watkins prepared to finish.
Lille, who progressed to the last 16 after coming through a play-off against Crvena Zvezda, responded with a promising spell. Ngal’Ayel Mukau fired narrowly wide — although the offside flag had already been raised — before Giroud glanced another header across the face of goal from Tiago Santos’ cross.
Perraud then tested Martinez with a dipping strike which the Argentine goalkeeper did well to push clear, while Rogers dragged an angled effort wide from the edge of the area just before the interval.
Giroud threatened again early in the second half, but his looping header was comfortably gathered by Martinez.
Villa’s breakthrough arrived shortly after the hour mark when Ezri Konsa launched a high ball forward which Emiliano Buendia nodded on at the edge of the penalty area. Watkins reacted quickest, lifting a calm header over Ozer to give the visitors the lead.
Emery’s side continued to press and nearly doubled their advantage in the 66th minute as Onana’s curling strike clipped the top corner of the woodwork.
Villa captain John McGinn, returning to the bench after being sidelined with a knee injury since mid-January, was introduced late on in place of Douglas Luiz. Buendia later attempted an acrobatic finish from Rogers’ deep cross, but his effort drifted wide as Villa held on to secure a valuable first-leg victory.
