Aston Villa match-winner Morgan Rogers has described Manchester United as “a tough team to play against”, insisting there is “no bigger team” in English football despite Villa’s impressive Premier League victory on Sunday.

Rogers scored twice at Villa Park to secure a crucial win for Unai Emery’s side, ensuring United left Birmingham empty-handed and keeping Villa firmly in the title race.

Rogers the Difference at Villa Park

The 21-year-old opened the scoring late in the first half with a superb strike before United responded through Matheus Cunha to restore parity at the break. However, Rogers produced another moment of quality in the second half to seal all three points for the hosts.

The defeat leaves United seventh in the Premier League table, having once again missed the opportunity to move into the top five.

Speaking after the match, Rogers underlined the scale of the challenge posed by Ruben Amorim’s side.

“It’s massive. Every game is important and there’s no bigger team than United,” he told Sky Sports. “They came here to play, they’re a tough team to play against.

“We haven’t had a great record against them recently, so we knew we had to put that right and we’re happy with the three points.”

Villa Maintain Title Momentum

The victory moved Aston Villa to within one point of Manchester City and just three points behind league leaders Arsenal, prompting questions over whether Emery’s side could turn the title race into a three-horse contest.

Rogers was keen to downplay such talk, insisting the squad remain focused on their immediate objectives.

“We’ll let everyone else talk about that,” he said. “You can make those conversations. We’re only focused on what our task is in each game.”

United Face Injury Concerns Ahead of Newcastle Clash

Manchester United now turn their attention to a Boxing Day home fixture against Newcastle United, a match that comes amid mounting injury concerns for Amorim.

United have lost five of their last six meetings with Eddie Howe’s side, and the task of improving that record may be complicated by the likely absence of key players Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo was ruled out of the trip to Villa Park after picking up a knock in training on Saturday, while Fernandes appeared to suffer a hamstring injury during the defeat.

Addressing the situation in his post-match press conference, Amorim admitted both players are doubtful.

“I think Kobbie might be out, Bruno is out,” he said. “So we will see. We are going to find solutions — no excuses.

“We need to win the next game and we will try to win the next game.”
