Barcelona brought 2025 to a close in commanding fashion with a composed 2-0 victory away to Villarreal, a result that leaves them top of La Liga heading into the new year.
Flick Praises Mentality as Barcelona End Year Top After Villarreal Win
While not their most flamboyant display of the season, the performance was marked by control, maturity and resilience — qualities that pleased head coach Hansi Flick, who stressed that the win was about far more than the three points collected.
Flick Delighted With Attitude and Mindset
Reflecting on the significance of the result and Barcelona’s position at the summit of the table, Flick could not conceal his satisfaction.
“The mentality and the attitude are incredible,” he said after the match. “I’m very proud. That’s all I can say. It’s a fantastic end to the year.”
Joan Garcia and Lamine Yamal Impress
Goalkeeper Joan Garcia was one of Barcelona’s standout performers, producing a series of vital saves at key moments to maintain control of the contest.
Flick was quick to acknowledge his contribution, while underlining the importance of collective responsibility.
“He saved us many times today. He’s an important player for us,” Flick said. “But we’re a team. We all defend with and without the ball.
“Today we were a bit tired and we missed some passes.”
The coach also addressed the hostile reception received by Lamine Yamal, who was repeatedly booed following Renato Veiga’s red card — a decision Flick described as “clear”.
“Lamine has to know how to handle it,” Flick explained. “He scored the second goal, which is the best response.”
Kounde Injury Update and Christensen Concern
There was a moment of concern late on when Jules Kounde was forced off, but Flick played down fears of a serious injury, offering reassurance after the match.
“He’s been ill for three or four days and had some problems,” Flick revealed. “He told me he would try to give his best. He felt a cramp.
“We will check it when we get back to Barcelona.”
Attention also turned to Andreas Christensen, who was absent and is set to miss the next phase of the competition. When asked about potential January reinforcements, Flick confirmed discussions would take place but kept the focus on the player’s recovery.
“I will talk to Deco on Monday,” he said. “But the first thing is for Andreas to come back well. We have to support him.
“He was in good form, played well in the Cup and trained well. It’s sad. I can only wish him all the best and hope he comes back as soon as possible.”
Focus on the Bigger Picture
Flick concluded by reiterating what mattered most from the night’s work, highlighting both the result and the resilience of his squad.
“What I like most about the game are the three points,” he said. “Joan saved us and kept a clean sheet.
“My team is a little tired. There aren’t many options at the moment, but the mentality of this team is incredible. I’m proud.”
