Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has moved a step closer to returning from injury after being pictured training on grass as part of his rehabilitation programme.

The 26-year-old has been sidelined since featuring in United’s 2–1 victory over Crystal Palace on 30 November, with what has proven to be a persistent back problem disrupting his season.

Long Absence Continues Amid Recovery Efforts

De Ligt made an encouraging start to the campaign before his progress was halted by the injury, which has kept him out of matchday squads since Michael Carrick assumed managerial duties.

Last month, Carrick acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the Netherlands international’s return, admitting there was no guarantee he would feature again before the end of the season.

The United head coach described the back issue as “proving difficult”, stressing the need for patience as the player continues his recovery.

Positive Signs in Training

Despite remaining unavailable for Monday’s Premier League clash against Brentford, there has been a positive update from the club.

Manchester United confirmed that De Ligt has resumed light training on the pitch under the supervision of the club’s medical team.

In a statement, the club said:
“De Ligt is working on the grass, undertaking individual training.

“The centre-back is progressing individually and doing everything possible to return.

“He remains focused on regaining full fitness, although no definitive timeframe has been set for his return to action.”

Defensive Options and Injury Updates

While De Ligt continues his recovery, Harry Maguire is set to return for the Brentford fixture after serving a two-match suspension.

However, Lisandro Martínez remains unavailable due to suspension, further limiting United’s defensive options.

Providing a broader update on squad fitness, Carrick said:
“To be honest, everything is as expected. There are a couple of knocks and minor issues following the last match, which is normal.

“Patrick is working his way back and making good progress. He is getting closer to rejoining training, which is encouraging.

“With Yoro, we are still assessing the situation. There is a possibility he could return soon, but at this stage it is not certain.”

Leny Yoro missed the recent 1–0 victory over Chelsea due to injury and will continue to be monitored, while Patrick Dorgu remains in rehabilitation as he recovers from a hamstring problem.

Cautious Optimism for De Ligt Return

Although De Ligt’s return date remains unclear, his progression to on-pitch training represents a significant step forward in his recovery.

Manchester United will be hopeful that the defender can regain full fitness before the end of the campaign, providing a timely boost to their defensive ranks.
