English duo Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood were on target as Marseille climbed to the top of Ligue 1 on Saturday, displacing Paris Saint-Germain with a commanding 3-0 home victory over Brest.
Marseille Go Top of Ligue 1 as Lens Thrash Monaco
Gomes opened the scoring in the 25th minute when his free-kick slipped through the hands of Brest goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki. Greenwood then doubled the lead from the penalty spot — his eighth league goal of the season — after Igor Paixão was brought down by defender Kenny Lala.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added a late third to seal the points as Marseille bounced back in style from their controversial midweek Champions League defeat to Atalanta, moving a point clear of PSG at the summit of the French top flight.
“It’s typical of Marseille,” said head coach Roberto De Zerbi. “We played poorly against Atalanta on Wednesday with almost the same team as today. But this time, I think we played a very good match and I truly enjoyed myself on the bench.
“There’s no reason for any OM player to be worried right now. We’re top of the table, we have the best attack with 28 goals scored, and I’d like the players to show even more courage and confidence,” De Zerbi added.
Lens Keep Pace After Dominant Win Over Monaco
Lens remain level on points with Marseille following a 4-1 demolition of 10-man Monaco, who endured a nightmare afternoon after USA international Folarin Balogun was sent off just minutes after scoring.
Odsonne Édouard fired Lens into an early lead in the principality before Balogun equalised from the penalty spot. However, Wesley Saïd quickly restored the advantage for the visitors, and Balogun’s dismissal for a reckless challenge on Mamadou Sangaré shifted the momentum firmly in Lens’ favour.
Sangaré added Lens’ third on the stroke of half-time, and Saïd struck again in the 60th minute to complete the rout. Ansu Fati’s missed late penalty deepened Monaco’s woes, leaving them five points adrift of the league leaders after back-to-back defeats.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1
Le Havre snatched a dramatic last-minute equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw against Nantes, while Paris Saint-Germain — missing several key players through injury — will have the chance to reclaim top spot on Sunday when they travel to Lyon.
Luis Enrique’s side will be without Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Désiré Doué, and Nuno Mendes, all sidelined with injuries.
