Liverpool have announced the departure of manager Arne Slot following a disappointing campaign that saw the club fall significantly short in their defence of the Premier League title.

In an official statement released on Saturday, the Merseyside club confirmed that they had decided to make a managerial change in what they described as a necessary “change of direction” for the future of the team.

The decision comes after Liverpool endured a difficult season, finishing fifth in the Premier League table and ending the campaign 25 points behind champions Arsenal. The disappointing outcome arrived despite the club investing a Premier League-record sum of almost £450 million on new signings during last summer's transfer window.

According to widespread reports, outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Slot after guiding the Cherries to European qualification for the first time in the club’s history.

Dramatic Change in Fortunes for Slot

Just over a year ago, Slot was being celebrated by Liverpool supporters after succeeding Jürgen Klopp and leading the club to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in his debut season.

However, expectations quickly shifted during the following campaign as Liverpool struggled for consistency and failed to challenge for major honours.

Supporter frustration reportedly grew as a series of underwhelming performances saw the Reds drift away from the title race and ultimately settle for a place outside the Premier League's top four.

Reports also suggested signs of unrest within the dressing room, with outgoing forward Mohamed Salah appearing to question the team's tactical direction.

Earlier this month, Salah attracted significant attention after posting a message on social media calling for a return to “heavy metal football” — a phrase strongly associated with Klopp’s high-intensity playing style. The post was interpreted by many observers as criticism of Slot’s more cautious tactical approach and was reportedly liked by several Liverpool players.

Liverpool’s final tally of 60 league points represented their lowest return since the 2015/16 season.

Although there had been suggestions that qualification for the UEFA Champions League could be enough to secure Slot another season in charge, Liverpool’s ownership group, Fenway Sports Group, ultimately decided a change was required.

Liverpool Explain Decision

In a statement confirming Slot’s departure, Liverpool expressed gratitude for his contribution while outlining the reasons behind their decision.

The club said:

“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to continue moving forward. It must be emphasised that this decision has not been taken lightly.

“The conclusion we have reached is based on the belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. This does not diminish the work Arne has done here, nor the respect we have for him.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”

Liverpool also confirmed that the process of appointing a new manager is already underway.

Iraola Leading the Race

While many supporters had hoped to see former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso return to Anfield, reports indicate that the Spaniard is instead set to take charge of Chelsea next season.

That development has left Iraola as the leading contender for the Liverpool role.

The Bournemouth manager has significantly enhanced his reputation after overseeing an impressive campaign that included an 18-match unbeaten run and a sixth-place finish in the Premier League. Remarkably, Bournemouth ended the season just three points behind Liverpool despite operating with considerably fewer financial resources.

Iraola also shares a strong working relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously held a senior role at Bournemouth.

Transfer Struggles and Personal Tragedy

Slot’s difficulties were compounded by Liverpool’s failure to maximise the impact of several major signings.

British transfer-record acquisition Alexander Isak endured an injury-disrupted campaign, while Florian Wirtz struggled to adapt fully following his £100 million arrival from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Dutch manager also had to navigate a period of immense emotional difficulty following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident during the summer.

Despite winning a Premier League title during his time at Anfield, Slot’s tenure ultimately came to an end as Liverpool opted to begin a new chapter under different leadership.
