Dayot Upamecano’s future at Bayern Munich remains uncertain amid strong interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Liverpool’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements could take a new twist after Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano confirmed that his agent is “taking care” of discussions regarding his next move, with speculation linking him to the Premier League.

The French international’s contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire at the end of the season, leaving him free to negotiate a move away from the Allianz Arena in the summer.
Upamecano, 26, has been the subject of mounting transfer interest from both Liverpool and Real Madrid, as uncertainty surrounds the future of several top defenders ahead of the next transfer window.

Liverpool’s Transfer Dilemma

Liverpool had been heavily linked with Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace during the summer transfer window. The England international even underwent a medical at Anfield on deadline day, but Palace ultimately blocked the move after failing to secure a suitable replacement.

Guehi’s current contract also runs until the end of the season, meaning the Reds are unlikely to sign both him and Upamecano. Instead, the Merseyside club may be forced to choose between the two defenders depending on availability and negotiations in the coming months.

Speaking to L’Équipe, Upamecano offered little clarity on his next move but hinted that talks are ongoing.

“My agent is taking care of it,” he said. “We will make the right decision. I’m receiving good advice. For now, my focus is entirely on this season and my goals with Bayern and the national team. I don’t have the headspace for anything else.”

Real Madrid Monitoring Situation

Reports in Spain claim Real Madrid have already reached a verbal agreement to sign Upamecano, shortly after their Champions League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last week.
If confirmed, it could trigger a transfer chain reaction across Europe involving multiple clubs and defenders.

Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté has also been tipped for a potential move to Madrid, a switch that could then open the door for either Upamecano or Guehi to arrive at Anfield. Whichever player does not join Liverpool could then fill the void left behind at their previous club.

Palace Chairman Explains Guehi Decision

Reflecting on Guehi’s failed transfer last summer, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said the club prioritised their European ambitions over a short-term financial gain.

“We felt we’d have a better season if we kept Marc,” Parish explained. “This is our first time in the Conference League — it’s a unique situation. If we were just fighting for mid-table, maybe we’d have taken the money.”

As both defenders’ contracts near their expiration, the upcoming transfer window promises a fascinating battle among Europe’s elite for two of football’s most sought-after centre-backs.
