Iraq head coach Graham Arnold has called on FIFA to provide swift clarification regarding the team’s potential World Cup play-off arrangements, with travel disruptions already affecting the squad’s preparations for a possible match in Mexico.

Arnold made the request in an official statement, stressing that uncertainty surrounding the scheduling of the play-off process is complicating Iraq’s planning ahead of what could be a decisive match on the road to the FIFA World Cup.

Travel disruption affecting preparations

According to the coach, preparations have been further disrupted by airport closures, forcing the national team to explore alternative travel arrangements while awaiting confirmation of the play-off schedule.

Arnold noted that a postponement of the play-off process could give the team additional time to organise its preparations and ensure players are fully ready for the crucial fixture.

Possible opponent yet to be determined

The Iraq manager also suggested that a delay might allow for a potential preliminary fixture between Bolivia and Suriname to determine Iraq’s eventual opponent in the qualification pathway.

Arnold added that further time could also help football authorities finalise decisions regarding Iran’s participation in the upcoming tournament, an issue that may influence the structure of the play-off system and the teams involved in the region.

Focus on assembling strongest squad

The Australian coach emphasised the importance of assembling Iraq’s strongest possible squad for what he described as the nation’s most significant football match in decades.

He stressed that relying solely on players based outside Iraq would not necessarily represent the country’s strongest available team, highlighting the need for careful planning and coordination in the selection process.

Football association working on arrangements

Arnold also revealed that Adnan Dirjal, president of the Iraq Football Association, is actively coordinating preparations as officials work to ensure Iraq’s place at the World Cup.

With uncertainty still surrounding travel logistics, scheduling and potential opponents, Arnold has urged FIFA to provide clear guidance as soon as possible so that Iraq can prepare effectively for the crucial play-off encounter.
