Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is hopeful history will repeat itself as his side prepare for a decisive final home match of the season in their push for Premier League promotion.

Ipswich have developed a recent tradition of sealing promotion on home soil, having secured their rise from League One in 2023 before achieving another milestone 12 months later by returning to the top flight for the first time in 22 years.

They now host Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, knowing that victory will confirm automatic promotion from the Championship under McKenna. Any other result, however, could see them forced into the uncertainty of the play-offs.

“You embrace the added intensity and pressure that comes with a match like this, but you also have to enjoy it,” McKenna said.

“It’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere at our stadium. This is the third time in four years we’ve had a home game with promotion on the line, and we recognise how special these moments are. We want to deliver a strong performance and secure the result.”

McKenna reported no fresh injury concerns ahead of the fixture, though he remains wary of the challenge posed by a QPR side currently positioned in mid-table despite losing their last three matches.

“I watched their game against Derby County last week, and they dominated possession against a play-off contender,” he noted. “They have a very capable and well-organised manager, and I am sure they will arrive fully prepared.

“They will be motivated to end their season positively in front of their travelling supporters and to do themselves justice.

“We expect a difficult match. The quality across this division is high, and there is a reason many teams have remained competitive throughout the season. We respect their strengths, but we also have confidence in our own performances, particularly at home.”

Captain Dara O'Shea is set to make his 45th league appearance of the campaign — and 55th in all competitions — remarkably without receiving a single yellow card.

The defender previously experienced promotion with West Bromwich Albion during the 2019–20 season, although that achievement came behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was a very different experience,” O’Shea reflected. “I was younger then and perhaps didn’t fully appreciate how significant promotion is — I may have thought it was something that happened regularly.

“In reality, it is incredibly difficult to achieve. To do it here, in front of our supporters, would be truly special. The atmosphere is going to be incredible, and I am really looking forward to it.

“Whether I am captain or not does not matter — my focus is on helping the club achieve promotion. This club belongs in the Premier League, given the ambition and the people behind it. Now it is about going out and earning that right.”
