VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Daniel Bauer following the club’s 2–1 home defeat to Hamburg on Matchday 25.

The 43-year-old departs after just 15 matches in charge of the Bundesliga side. Alongside Bauer’s exit, the club also announced that managing director of sport Peter Christiansen has been relieved of his duties.

Club explains decision

Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler acknowledged that the decision to part ways with Bauer was a difficult one but insisted that change was necessary in order to revitalise the team and improve their chances of avoiding relegation.

“This decision was anything but easy for us,” Schwegler said in an official statement.

“We had hoped to turn things around together. However, after analysing the overall situation, we came to the conclusion that the team needed new impetus in order to secure our place in the league.

“We are very grateful to Daniel for his commitment to the first team and also for the many years he spent working as a coach within the Wolfsburg academy.

“We wish him all the very best for the future, both professionally and personally.”

Short spell in charge

Bauer was appointed as Wolfsburg manager in November, replacing Paul Simonis. His tenure began with some encouraging results, as he recorded two victories and a draw in his first four matches in charge.

However, the team’s form soon declined. A heavy 8–1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Matchday 16 proved to be a major setback, and Wolfsburg subsequently endured a run of eight consecutive matches without a victory.

With results continuing to deteriorate and the club slipping further down the Bundesliga table, the hierarchy ultimately decided that Bauer’s position was no longer sustainable.

Relegation battle intensifies

Wolfsburg currently sit 17th in the Bundesliga standings, two points behind Werder Bremen, who occupy the relegation play-off position.

With only nine matches remaining in the season, the club faces a crucial battle to retain its top-flight status.

Wolfsburg’s first fixture following Bauer’s dismissal will be a difficult away trip to Hoffenheim on Matchday 26, as the Wolves attempt to halt their poor run of form and climb out of the relegation zone.
