O'Neill had insisted before the European opener that his players needed to put the derby disappointment behind them and concentrate on the upcoming fixtures. The defeat to Ferencváros means the response he wanted did not arrive at Celtic Park.

The Europa League league phase is a long campaign, meaning one defeat does not determine Celtic's overall prospects.

UEFA's fixture list shows Celtic's next league-phase match will come away to Benfica on 15 October, before home and away fixtures against Celta, Beşiktaş, Torreense, Omonia, Marseille and Union SG later in the competition.

That gives O'Neill and his players time to recover, but the opening defeat has already increased the importance of the matches ahead.
