Bayern Munich clinched the Women’s Bundesliga title for a fourth successive season on Wednesday, following a hard-fought 3–2 victory away to newly promoted Union Berlin.

The decisive moment came late in the match, as Klara Bühl set up fellow substitute Giulia Gwinn for the winning goal, sealing the championship after Union had twice battled back to level the score.

Late Drama Seals Title Triumph

Despite rotating their squad, Bayern initially appeared in control when Edna Imade opened the scoring in the eighth minute, converting from a corner.

However, Union Berlin responded swiftly through Sophie Weidauer, who capitalised on a defensive error before embarking on a determined run and finishing past Bayern goalkeeper Cara Bösl to equalise in the 11th minute.

Bayern regained the lead early in the second half when Barbara Dunst struck from long range in the 50th minute, her effort finding the inside of the left post.

Union once again demonstrated resilience, with Lia Kamber levelling the score in the 77th minute following a well-worked team move. Yet Bayern had the final say, as Gwinn struck the decisive goal in the 84th minute to secure all three points and confirm the title.

Dominant Domestic Campaign

Bayern’s latest triumph caps a dominant league campaign in which they have dropped points in just one match — a draw at home to Carl Zeiss Jena in September.

With three rounds remaining, the Bavarian side hold an unassailable 15-point lead over second-placed Wolfsburg, the last team other than Bayern to win the title, having lifted the trophy in 2022.

Wolfsburg were held to a goalless draw away at Werder Bremen, confirming Bayern’s status as champions.

Focus Shifts to European and Domestic Cup Glory

Attention now turns to the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where Bayern will host Barcelona on Saturday in the first leg of their semi-final tie. The German champions are aiming to reach the final for the first time, though they remain mindful of their heavy 7–1 defeat to the Spanish side in their earlier meeting during the league phase.

Bayern head coach José Barcala opted to rest several key players for the clash with Union, including Giulia Gwinn, Klara Bühl and Pernille Harder, all of whom began the match on the bench but ultimately played decisive roles.

In addition to their European ambitions, Bayern will also contest the Women’s DFB-Pokal final against Wolfsburg on 14 May in Cologne, as they pursue further silverware this season.

Double Success for Bayern Clubs

The club’s success has extended across both men’s and women’s teams, with Bayern Munich’s men also securing the Bundesliga title last weekend, underlining a remarkable period of dominance for the German giants.
