Barcelona to Return to Olympic Stadium for First Half of 2027-28 Season

Barcelona are set to return temporarily to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys for the opening half of the 2027–28 season as further work on the redeveloped Camp Nou, including installation of its new roof, is carried out.

Barcelona Prepare for Another Temporary Move

Barcelona are preparing to leave the redeveloped Camp Nou once again, with the club planning to begin the 2027–28 season at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc.

The move is part of the club’s plans to complete another major phase of the Camp Nou redevelopment without disrupting the football calendar. Barcelona have already used the Olympic Stadium as their temporary home during the renovation and are now preparing for another spell away from their traditional ground.

Club treasurer Ferran Olivé confirmed at Barcelona’s general meeting that the current campaign is expected to be completed at Camp Nou before the team moves back to Montjuïc for the beginning of the following season.

The Camp Nou Roof Work Is Driving the Decision

The principal reason for the temporary relocation is the installation of Camp Nou’s new roof.

The roofing work is scheduled to begin in June 2027 and is expected to take roughly four to five months. Although that timetable could potentially allow Barcelona to return earlier in the 2027–28 campaign, the club is taking a cautious approach because of the delays that have affected the redevelopment project in previous years.

Rather than risk having construction work interfere with home fixtures, Barcelona have sought to secure Montjuïc as their base while the most demanding phase of the project is completed.

Why Barcelona Could Stay Until January

The proposed arrangement goes beyond simply finding a temporary venue while the roof is being installed.

Barcelona intend to play the first half of the 2027–28 campaign at the Olympic Stadium, with the current plan pointing towards a return to Camp Nou in January 2028. ESPN reported that the club approved a further €510 million in financing to help complete the redevelopment project.

The longer stay also provides additional protection against construction delays. Although the roof installation is expected to finish during the autumn of 2027, Barcelona’s previous experience with the redevelopment means the club is reluctant to build its sporting calendar around an overly optimistic completion date.

UEFA Fixtures Add Another Complication

European competition is another factor behind Barcelona’s plans.

Barcelona want to avoid having to change their home venue in the middle of the Champions League league phase. UEFA regulations require clubs to use the same home stadium throughout that phase, making a carefully planned temporary relocation more practical than moving between Camp Nou and Montjuïc during the competition.

Consequently, Barcelona’s plan would see their domestic and European home matches staged at the Olympic Stadium during the relevant part of the season before a return to Camp Nou once the timing allows.

Camp Nou’s Capacity Will Continue to Grow

Barcelona’s temporary departure comes as the capacity of Camp Nou continues to increase in stages.

The stadium is currently operating with only part of its planned seating capacity available. According to ESPN, the capacity is currently capped at around 62,000, while the club expects it to increase to approximately 75,000 as additional sections are opened during the current campaign.

The completed stadium is ultimately expected to accommodate around 105,000 spectators and will feature the new roof as part of the wider redevelopment.

The staged reopening means Barcelona can continue using Camp Nou before the entire project is finished, while the remaining construction work is carried out around the stadium.

Barcelona’s Long-Term Homecoming Remains the Objective

The return to Montjuïc is therefore intended to be temporary rather than a change to Barcelona’s long-term home.

The club’s objective remains the completion of the Camp Nou redevelopment and a permanent return to a fully modernised stadium. The venue has also been selected to host the 2029 Champions League final, adding further significance to the completion of the project.

For Barcelona, the 2027–28 relocation represents another stage in a redevelopment process that has already required the club to spend extended periods away from Camp Nou.

If the current timetable is maintained, supporters will see Barcelona begin that season at Montjuïc before the team returns to Camp Nou in January 2028, when the club expects the stadium to be ready for the next phase of its long-term future.
